I’ve been back since Tuesday, but I’ve been unwinding and putting the regular life back together since then. The above photo is pretty much the epitome of the trip. Comics, good friends, inside jokes, and a free continental breakfast. Photos are uploaded, thoughts gathered and the full report with poorly composed photos are after the cut! Do you dare discover what transpired?

I’ll be at Comix & Stories tomorrow!

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 | Uncategorized | No Comments

Tomorrow is the annual Comix & Stories comic convention here in Vancouver. The cool thing is that it’s getting a change of venue this year and moving into the conference rooms of the Vancouver Art Gallery, which used to be the old courthouse. Beautiful building with stone lions and marble stairs, worth the trip for the architecture alone. But it’s all about the comics tomorrow.

I’ll be there sharing table space with the folks from Cloudscape selling some buttons and micro comics as well as the anthology I took part in. If you’re in need of adventure on Sunday, you should swing by and say hello! Admission is free and there are going to be a lot of talented guests there I’ll hopefully get to meet.

Vancouver Comic Jam

Two panels from the July Vancouver Comic Jam

Two panels from the July Vancouver Comic Jam

Hey there house guests! On the third Saturday of every month the Vancouver Comic Jam meets in the loft of a japanese restaurant in Vancouver to kick back, drink some alcohol, meet some new people, eat some food (I highly suggest the Sonna Banana for dessert), and draw collaborative comics (jam).

A jam is simply drawing the first panel of a comic and passing it along to the next person to draw what they will. That’s really the only rule. Well, and ink what you draw, pencil drawings are pretty hard to see in low light.  It’s a great experience to see where your idea is taken and where you can take an idea.

There are no censors, and there is no code of conduct so the innocent hobo cat with a talking hat is often not so innocent by the end of the page. But that’s how it goes, sometimes a story stays clean and sometimes it’s dirty. Sometimes there is a logical progression while sometimes it’s a non sequitur disaster by the time the last panel is drawn. It’s all good.

Check out the Jam from July.

The Vancouver Jam is by no means the first, it might have started in Montreal and spread from there, but there’s Jam’s held all over the place. (Too lazy to list them but search for comic jam or drink ‘n draw plus your nearest city and something’s bound to turn up.) If there isn’t one in your town, why don’t you start one? All you need are two people, a piece of paper, and some pens. It usually snowballs from there.

ComicPress 2.0 BE

Saturday, April 14th, 2007 | Uncategorized | No Comments

It’s not officially released until Monday, but I thought I’d mention that ComicPress 2.o: Blogging Edition is available for download. I’ve been playing with the beta version that I’m going to use for a comic that should be (re)launching soon and I’m very much liking it. It’s essentially a template for Wordpress and is easy to install and easy to use. If you’re looking for a comic updating code and are as horrible at coding as I am, this is a really good way to go. Here’s the test site.
